Baseball returns to state; will face Santiam Christian
Valley Catholic grabbed the fourth seed out of the WVL last week and is making their second consecutive appearance in the state baseball championships. The Valiants will travel to Santiam Christian on Tuesday (5-20) for a 4:30 start. This is an OSAA event and admission will be charged. All of the information about the state tournament can be found at www.osaa.org Last week five Valiants were honored as all-league selections.

Coaches
Sawyer Smith - Head Coach 1st Year
Sawyer is a familiar name to all Portland State Football fans. Last season as their starting quarterback he led the Vikings to a 6-3 record. Included in those six wins was a season opening victory over Division 1A New Mexico on the road (173 yards passing and 2 touchdowns). He finished his career at Portland State with 3,242 yards passing and 29 touchdowns in two years as a starter. Coach Smith was an all Big-Sky Conference Academic performer in 2004 and 2005. While in high school he lettered three times in football and basketball, twice in baseball at W.F. West High School. Already this year Coach Smith has served as VC’s offensive coordinator in football and head JV coach for the boys’ basketball team.
Mike Thomas- Assistant Coach 2nd Year
Coach Thomas returns to the baseball staff after three successful seasons as an assistant with the girls’ basketball team. Mike Thomas was a three-sport varsity athlete in high school—basketball, baseball, and Cross Country. Mike was an all-league forward in basketball and a three-time all league baseball player as a catcher and pitcher at St. George’s High School in Spokane. He won the St. George’s Athlete of the year in 1994-1995. At St. Michael’s college in Vermont, Mike was a four-year varsity catcher and an all conference selection. Upon graduation, Mike became a personal hitting instructor and select baseball coach in Seattle, Washington.
